Ok buddies. Here we go again........ :) :) :)

Gave me nightmarish jitters. I suppose every if not most persons who had crossed this phase had or might have gone through these mixed emotions.

Life in India started looking really really great.
Absolutely. Ever since my visa grant arrived, life is India has started sounding fantabulous.

All those things that seemed quite nagging and frustrating here, have started to look 'manageable' and tolerable.

While some people may be dreaming of the day they land in Oz, I seem to be looking at the IED and hoping that it doesn't arrive too soon.

Is it just me, or it happens with others as well?

Before I discuss further on my experience DownUnder.

Would like to state the kind of options which I had looked upon but was not particularly interested in pursing them.

Some reasons were thrown out by spouse and rest were deemed as not suitable by my buddies mentioned in the first part of this thread.

1) Use the holidays which I had accumulated over years of service, go DownUnder and hunt for job.
2) Take leave on lose of pay or sabbatical leave and go for job hunt.
3) This one is quite interesting folk :- Put down papers, during the last few weeks of notice period get a job offer in India tell the new company two months notice period. Pack off from the current company as you have already served the notice period. Go for job hunt. If successful, ignore the job offer, if not the job offer can be used as safety net. I felt its cheating the company who will be waiting for me to them.
4) Take spouse with you. The probability of either one from the family getting a job offer is doubled. Also moral will be there.
5) Go alone, face the music and dance to the tune. Either Bharatanatyam, hip hop, classical, jazz, salsa, or whatever....

After weighing the pros and cons of each of the options, I decided to go alone as most of immigrants usually do.

My parents did not meddle in my decisions, all they had to say was.

Son, you are a grown-up adult, a husband, and a father.
We hope whatever decision you make will be a wise step and we will you if not for financial , our blessings are always with you.

Trust me, if I were a superstitious person, I wouldn't have boarded the flight heading to Sydney. In the last two weeks, all sort unforeseen minor events and instances were happening repeatedly and regularly. Probably, I was stressing out and was seeing only those. You never know.

The eyes see what the mind wants them to see.

Missed our kid in a big crowded shopping mall during a weekend for close to 10mins (felt like ever those minutes) and our daughter came back to us after her own set of window shopping. Nightmare nightmare, I wish and hope none should experience such situations. Seriously, it makes you go crazy and feel helpless. Which makes you run like mad, crazy person, calling her out in the crowd. We became more vigilant and protective with our kid from then on.

Our baby sitter or in-house maid was kidnapped and returned back after few days. I will not explain this case further.

For example, went to one of my favorite temple in Thiruvathavur early in the morning (birth place of Manikkavasakar), I was the only person sitting infront of the main deity. After the early morning abhishagum and pooja, when the priest was about to light the aarthi to the lord, the alter went off. Is it a bad omen ? God only knows.

A simple straight forward bookmyforex transaction was becoming complicated, forgot to take the port, there was no online copy of my port, trust me I didnt have :( luckily my spouse didnt yell at me :)

Forgot my laptop in Kumar Mess restaurant after lunch and had to run back to it after half an hour to find the laptop in the same place where I left.

Went to get blessing from elders of the family, fell from the bike, missed by a whisker a massive head injure at my temple.

Bird droppings on head.

Slipper strip cutting off.

These are the stuffs which I from top of my head.

There were quite a many more, even my ever optimistic spouse also was little upset with these experiences.

Next is Sydney from a totally new person's view point. When you are new to a place you tend to notice even a minor thing which is different from usual routine or belief. They are coming next.

Hang in there buddies :):):)

Sometimes its true. We don't know whether it is coincidence or some sort of sign. I too had a incident where I left my port in the Xerox shop before going to meet my agent to make payment for the visa. I seriously considered it as a bad omen. But as my mom says God never does a harm to our life. Its our choices and decisions.
Waiting for the real fun to begin in Sydney. Keep posting

Few things which I noticed

Reached Sydney on 4th of August. Slept off the entire day.

As per earlier plan till the last day of my travel I was to wait at the airport for 5 hours and then go to house address, as all my roommates go for work during day.

Fortunate for me and unfortunate for one of my roommate, he had twisted his ankle and was working from home that day. Super, I narrowly avoided the prospect of sitting in airport for 5 more hours after the travel.

Felt it was little colder than the place where I lived for just over a decade in a city which had one of the best climate in India.

As a new comer to Sydney these are some of the stuffs which caught my eyes immediately.

1) There was this button at each traffic pole if pressed, will give a green signal for pedestrians to cross the road, based on the inbuilt algorithm.
2) People seem to have good road or traffic sense.
3) All most all the cars were automatic. I am still coming to on the number plates, in India it was usually like this KA for Karnataka; TN for Tamil Nadu, UK for Uttraakand, so on,I suppose the naming could be bought and you can right whatever you want within few guidelines and the plates have unique chip in them. Not very sure.
4) Variety of cars running on the roads and different ethnic groups had some pattern to their unique taste of cars I suppose.
5) Outside food are costly based on the menu. They are smelling really awesome, each time I cross the those plaza areas. Will try all or most of them once I have enough cash in my hand.
6) People usually greeted or smiled when you see them with a smiley face.
7) Even police personal smile at you and say how are you today, mate. Cops greeting a civilian.!!!
8) In one road crossing I was waiting for a car to -by as there was no traffic signal. The car stopped and driver waived his hand towards me to cross the
road, surprise. Back in my country none does that, I have not done it while driving in most occasions. Later came to know if the pedestrian sign (Radium board with legs pic on it) is there, the pedestrian has the right to walk and the vehicle had to stop.
9) How to handle round about, 1st exit 2nd exit 3rd exit 4th exit. Always leave way for the person in right hand side.
10) Not much honking by motorist. If the driver was unhappy with the way the other driver is driving, they usually flash the indicator or head lights thank honking.
11) Usage of Opal card. I suppose these type of technology has reached the metros in India, I didnt get much chances to use them regularly, so these were quite new for me. Swipe in and swipe out.
12) Recharging the Opal Card using the Kiosk
13) Lifts in train station, escalators with bigger inclinations than I had used earlier.
14) Buttons near seats, that red buttons in yellow rode, to press if you had to get down from bus at the next stops.
15) If the opal card had been used regularly for 4 days of the week and completed 8 trips, rest of the trips for that week is FREE. It includes buses, trains and ferries.
16) Train seats can be oriented towards the direction in which the train is traveling.
17) Maximizing the number of engers by using double Deckers.
18) I usually pay and prepare coffee using the 7 Eleven coffee vending machine. Later came to know you can prepare the coffee and pay. Need to try that ice cream makers soon. Scared if I will get cold. $1 for a regular coffee, if prepared by a person the same size coffee would cost $3.5 roughly.
19) No separate seats for ladies. Reserved seats are only for aged people and alternatively abled people, Hurrah!! now no aunty will ask me to get up from my seat, saying in that threatening & commanding tone "ladies seat." Having said that got up from my seat for a kid, his father was quite happy by that gesture.
20) I reckon people saw me little weirdly when I wore hand glows during my evening walk. While some girls walked in their shorties. Also noted females had lot of different formal options.
21) Public display of affection was quite common and didnt find many hawk eyes people starring at them.
22) Bondi beech was clean but much smaller compared to Marina beach of Madras.
23) Couples were having fun, but they didnt use an umberla like in Madras to cover them-up.
24) Even at middle of the day, was able to see some people jogging.
25) Taxi drivers in most cases dont rob you by taking a longer route. But costly.
26) Free buses to temple on Thursdays in the place where I stay.
27) That natural feeling of affection when you see a south Indian person, they are present in quite some numbers. Few tend to look back, few look at the ground as if they have dropped some money and few just look straight into my eyes without smile, Indian Elders (Elderly parents) who are with their sons or daughters are the ones whom smile back regularly at you when you come across them. :)
28) Beauty shops are giving more emphasis to nails, eye lashes and hair. Back home, it is more of threading and facials. Ladies please note.
29) Less number of scanning and xerox shops.
30) Fuels needs to be self filled. There is line in super markets in which you can check out your shopping and pay the amount of yourself using card.
31) Shops closes by 5 to 6pm, that was a surprise. Imagine majority of shops in Spencer plaza or Mantri Square closing by 6 to 7pm? We would ask is there some riot or some politician has ed away?
32) Shop assistance, attend one customer at a time and put the next customer in waiting. FIFO concept. But the number customer they handle are minimal compared to their Indian counter parts. Same with my bank experience.
33) People naturally form queue while boarding the bus.
34) I was advised to avoid looking or smiling at a kid, like we mostly tend to do in my home country. That was weird.
35) Try to avoid holding hands with your male buddies in public. Last weekend went out for buying some meat product from Moree butcher shop. Me and my roommate were wearing red color tops and carrying one famous rights group's umberla. Noticed it only when we were returning from shopping. oopppss....
36) Buying cars seemed easy but Car maintenance is quite a hefty stuff business, insurance, rejo, fuel cost, traffic fines
37) In India it may be easier to get the license but very difficult to drive, however, here its difficult to get license and comparably easier to drive, I suppose, not very sure.
38) Chinese and Indian are very very similar in their social behavioral patterns.
39) Some people are willing to offer help, the other day I was asking for directions at a bus stop, a lady driving her car, stopped and assisted me. I am sure she is Italian based on her slang.
40) Public Libraries are really awesome folks. People use the garbage bins.
41) Most people dont spit in public corners, I suppose because here there are no pan shops. Have to wait and see once pan shops opens-up at ever other corner.
42) When you go for interview, the receptionist is the first person to wish you best of luck to succeed in the interview.
43) Lot of options to try various different & unique cuisines
44) Not many TV channel options.
45) Gambling and betting are legal
46) News channels and print media are like seniors of Arnab Goatsami, based on from people who have spent close to a decade here.
47) We can visit Parliament and checkout the house proceedings which is totally not possible in my home country unless I know someone at a highest possible level.
48) Heard mugging do occur if you are in wrong place at a wrong time.
49) Most of the time during public transport travel, people are hooked up with their electronic gadgets, not much chit chats to over hear. Frequency of trains are quite good.
50) People do beg here, I gave a $2 to an old lady when she came-up to me and asked if I can give her $2.

Started collecting coins, this time it is $1 coins with different obverse and reverse from various years. My better half specifically told, dont start your coin collecting hobby there also :D ;) :) Sorry darling I have already started :D :D :D

Will post more in the coming few days.

I am into XYZ domain with ABC years of total experience, when will I get the job, how many months does it take on an average to get the first break.

Is LinkedIn profile, covering letter, calling HR consultants, applying in seek or anyother sites; will help. :eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows:

Is Java; VB.net; Data Analytics; MSBI; IOS programming; Citrix / AS400; Mainframe; SAP; Service Now; VMware; Oracle DB; Ruby; Angular; Perl; Python; Shell programming; scripting; BA skills; Management experience are deemed as hot. Are they in demand, how is the requirement there.

What are the best months to land. How to hunt for job.

Do we need to convert resumes to Australian format.

What kind of questions or how many rounds of interview do these companies conduct.

Dont they conduct walk-ins? Or can we walkin to consultants or company and drop our CVs.

What is the usual pay scales.

I am Back!

Last time, I stopped at a critical point.

I am getting when will the next release be out.

Some how squeezed in sometime now. Date : 30th Aug 2015 09:25 pm.

Typed this yesterday, currently using my roommate's lappy to cut copy paste the details.

Just now completed few last minute stuffs.

Using lappy after a gap of several days. I wish this time it works out.

Typing in notepad, as the virus windows pops out repeatedly not allowing me to use the browsers.

Hopefully, all goes fine, its going to cut copy paste from the notepad to Expatforum thread.

Shall we start, buckle-up mates! :boxing::boxing::noidea::noidea::noidea:

:( :)

August 4th I landed at Sydney Airport, immigration went fine.

Came to room, bit excited as its my FIRST overseas trip. Be it business or vacation.

August 4th I just dozed off. Didnt do much.

Was wondering inside whether this was a correct decision or not.

My roommates were explaining the ground rules.

Evening, walked out for 30-45mins around Strathefield plaza.

Located the bank - NAB

Next day, i.e August 5th I got up a bit late. All my roommates were out to office.

Slowly got ready, walked to the bank. 10mins walk.

Stood in the queue, took my port and grant copy.

The teller said you need to take appointment, I asked when was the next appointment.

He gave me August 7th Friday noon 12 o clock. He took my port and made a copy, said application will be ready, come back on Friday.

Do I have anyother option or to question or clarify with him. Quoting some of my s have opened iSaver Classic without appointment.

Naaah.... I was not in mood to do that. Just said OK for whatever he said and came back.

Watched TV, chatted in mobile and the usual stuff. :confused2::confused2::confused2:

6th of Aug'15

August 6th :

One of our EF member called me, whether I can accompany him for his house hunt. He had moved from Melbourne to Sydney after getting an offer. He arrived some 30 or 40 days to Oz, I reckon.

Readily said OK, and went out with him. Also he stated bring your documents (basically grant and port) we will go to Centerlink too. I thought, lets get this Medicare done. He too wanted some clarification.

Went for Studio apartment hunt. Saw the property.

As usual rental application form and points.

Will the rental application and points details once I feel like I have shared some meaningful information.

He got the application and then we went to Centerlink.

Medicare, it was easy buddies. No big deal. Just walk-in to the center which is near to your place, fill the form and submit to them. They will take photo copy of port and grant. Thats it.

Medicare card will be sent in post to you after a week or two.

Also if you want, you check whether you will get any job seeking guidance. I did ask them, they opened a record but nothing was coming through. They logged a ticket for me and asked me to come next day or walk-in to Burwood (as it is close to Strathfield) or the same Centerlink office for further assistance.

I know in back of my mind that I might not be eligible for any benefits, but it is worth a shot to check with them.

We had walked for close to 4KM, took the bus back to Strathfield and friend got down at his stop.

All this while I was randomly clicking photos all around me. There is an old saying in my mother tongue.

Like a CountryGuy seeing a big sweet stall. It is like a idiom in my mother tongue.

Anything else I did??? I cannot .

That night had some scary dreams at night. Nightmares.

May be because of the uncertainitly and risks staring at my situation. Left a fun loving daughter and loving wife, parents, sibilings back home and trying my luck in a place previously known as NEW HOLLAND.

Yes, thats the name some Dutch sailors kept for the western region of modern day Australia when they discovered the western coastline.

Eastern coastline and New Zealand were discovered and mapped by Captain Cook.

Ok, enough of history.

7th of August

August 7th:

Same situation, got up late. Got ready, went to the NAB bank to open the .

The application was in place, just signed. They said, it will take few days for the ATM card to be mailed to my address.

Noticed there was a personalized interaction between bankers and customers, probably they handle lesser number of customers compared to their Indian counterparts.

But still it was good to experience it.

In the evening went out to meet fellow EF who had moved during that period or previous few months at Parramatta.

It was quite an experience.

In the group one guy had job offer and he was ing his company on the following Monday 10th August, another person had decided to go home next week Wednesday.

Note : A person quite active in sharing information in text via EF is not a superman.

He/she is also a normal human being with their own set of short comings and strong areas. So, dont take examples out of anyone.

Why I am saying this, do not get depressed or over confident or do not measure your ability against another person, each one of us are unique with different set of skills, attitude, experiences, exposure level and finally, overall prescription about life.

After seeing me and my behavior, one person in the group said, boss, be like this joyfully and enjoy the moment, do not rush into applying for job.

Get used to your environment both mentally and physically. I had this ability to listen to people, whether they are junior to me or senior or peer to me.

Knowledge gained by listening is the biggest wealth - says one of the important works of literature called Tirukkural

Even I had informed folks that I will start applying for jobs only from Monday 10th August.

Came back to Strathfield with mixed feelings.

Evening while I was in Strathfield, one of my college buddy called me over phone.

Hey Mathan, are you busy today? Shall we meet?

I replied, why not.

20mins Strathfield Train station, I will reach to pick my car, if possible come there. He said.

Walked in 10mins to the place and he came.

We had quite a bit of talking as we met after some 11 years if I am not wrong.

He said his experience and story. One thing I understood, save money even if you get job with decent salary for any kind of eventualities.

After few hours of very meaningful chat by him, he said, why don't you come-over to my place for a drink, as my wife had gone to Melbourne. She was also our college-mate.

Readily said yes. He said, its a welcome party from my end, you dont pay.

Took a bottle of liquor and went to his flat.

Drank all night, one thing we didnt discuss.

That was, HOW TO HUNT FOR JOBs.

We were talking about all other things about Aussie Life, his weird experiences and comparing with Life style in India.

Had dinner and slept off at his place.

Next couple of days

August 8th:

Had a light breakfast in the morning at his place and I went out with him on house hunt. Again the same points system, fill online application, so on an so forth.

At each stage, life throws different set of challenges, you all might have known it, I need not have to tell this, correct right.

Schooling's, college, job hunt, love or marriage, post marriage fights, kids, job growth, like it goes... we miss out the beauty of life in this mad rat race of society in earning money, fame, name, satisfying our wants(greed) different from needs... ok OFF topic back to your experience buddy...(I can hear your voice folks ;) )

Close to noon reached Strathfield. Couple of our EF were going to Bondi beach (these two did not come for previous day meeting) I too ed with them.

Just walked around in the beach. Seeing the nature. Walked along the seashore sand and beach side rock trail. Took snaps as usual a lots of them.

I think there was a Surf2City or City2surf running event was in progress on that day.

Beachside my last company Aussie employees few hundreds of them were having a team party. I was becoming nostalgic. Ah my company till a week or two. Now I am an outsider :( :confused2::eek:

Thats ok, life moves on.

Came back to home. Felt really tired. Just slept off.

August 9th Sunday:

Again all my roommates had different set of appointments and I was left alone at home.

Tab, net, TV gave company till evening.

By evening I was getting nervous, Boss D day is closing in.

Fellow you will know where you stand from tomorrow. Start working on your CV, covering letter and LinkedIn profile.

ed by CV, covering letter to Seek and in LinkedIn ed my certifications too. As you know I have been adding connections for quite sometime now.

Did some minor corrections here and there.

Regarding my CV, it was prepared by naukri resume writters in India some two or three years back when my wife wanted to me quit my last company where I was working without much of package improvement for close to an decade. However, it didnt succeed in getting a job in India, also I was not eagerly applying for job in India during that time.

Covering letter took assistance from my friend Sura thats his nick name, mentioned in the first page of this thread.

August 10th Monday:

Got up as if I am going to some job.

Even then I couldnt see my roommates they packed off, by 7 or something not very sure.

Took bath, did my prayers and started applying left right and center.

Via Seek, if mail was provided will send it to that ID too, if number was provided calling them. Also searching the person in LinkedIn and sending a mail via LinkedIn too.

The responses for phone will be one among the following:

1) Goes to voice mail. Be prepared to leave and crisp message.
2) Someone at the frontdesk picks the call and gets your message.
3) Someone at the frontdesk picks the call and transfers the call, it either goes to voice mail or the intended person attends the call.
The response will be something like this, we are shortlisting CVs will review and get back to you.

Initially I was noting down the skillset, job details, HR/ person details etc. But during the second part of the day, it was becoming more tedious for me. So, stopped updating my jobs applied tracker.

Later that night talked to my wife and daughter. That is 0100 hours (Aug 11th)

I was in tears when my daughter hugged the laptop screen and said Appaaa.... she is just 2.5 years old, haven't learnt to talk yet, just a word or two and lots of actions.

Having said that seeing her itself lifts the moral, I have to do this for her. I will do it for her.

Did not sleep properly that night.

August 11th Tuesday:

Day started as usual but god had a twist in the tale.

Lappy was not booting-up till 1400 hours local time. Called-up wife and told, see I told you, we will buy a new laptop but you told to manage with our old laptop which was 6 or 7 years old, see half a day gone. Productivity lost.

I just stopped talking about that topic as I didnt want to end-up in a long distance international telephonic fight with my better half regarding the lappy.

I was worried about the lappy. When it booted up during tea session, I was going crazy and applying for whatever jobs which came in the portals Seek and LinkedIn.

Have to mention, my wife also searched with the key words and ed me in keeping my informed of any job posting. Many jobs she pointed out where matching exactly to my skills.

Later that night once again video call with wife and daugher, same set of family emotions.

Once the call was over, thought, what about several people who are here for months together hunting for jobs leaving their family in overseas. If I am too emtionally attached then I will lose my cool and will reach the breaking point sooner than expected.

However, during the call with wife, had informed her the rough plan ahead.

Darling (little bit of sugar coating is needed boss while talking to spouse, girls do this most of the times ;) :) :D, they can easily relate to this), if things did not go as per plan and if I dont get a job before November 2nd or 3rd week, I will return back to India, upgrade my skills, spend time with daughter and you. Will return to Oz during mid of Feb'16.

There came the response. Boss, what are you taking, its not even two days since you started hunting for job, are joking or what. Keep trying you will get it. Even if you dont get it, try for part-time jobs to meet-ends. But no retreat.

It was more like school teacher, are you going to write or not. I said to myself, What!!! part-time? as if someone is waiting in house enterance with my name on a pluck card, ""Wanted wanted ONLY you are wanted.""

Anyways, lets see whats in store for me, I said to myself.

August 12th Wednesday:

I think ATM card or Medicare card came.

Lappy was showing signs as if it was in a LIFE ING SYSTEM IN ICU ward in hospital. Again was using every minute of the available time went on applying.

Now, I was in a state of panic. Because the lappy had lot of study materials and I dont have an backup in external HDD.

My external HDD is in India, safely connected to our TV as my kid will not eat without seeing her favourite set of Animation movies and copies of her favourite ads.

By noon, lappy was declared dead by the doctors their name was FATE!!!

I closed the shop, took bath. Went on a walking spree. Didnt know what to do.

Got out of the house, plugged in my wife's old samsung galaxy ACE mobile. (I am not that interested in mobiles, so I used to use only 2nd hand mobile after my wife upgrades to a new mobile) That was the first time in my life, I was listening to songs while walking using a mobile.

Illayaraja songs I suppose my wife had created that playlist for her, started my walk in the dark streets around Strathfield towards Enfield.

Mind was thinking all sort of worst cases, see, you got all wrong signs before departing, those were all signals telling you dont go dont go... you will face hardships. Even then you came and now, you are facing the music. Was talking to myself and walking.

Arguing to myself with slight bit of tears looking to come out and roll over my cheeks.

Finally, end-up in Sai Baba temple. Not very big in size but they gave me food. Dinner over there. While coming back, Rajini songs, I guess Robo and Padaiappa movies, temple and songs effect, I was saying to myself. Nothing is lost. Let me start again.

Had a chit chat with my roommates. It helped in defusing my mind.

Mani, Senthil & Shankar (my roommates whom I knew after reaching Oz) played a critical part in making a heavier heart lighter with some guys talking and some really useful guidance .
