Hi guys and gals! My wife and two teen boys to moved to Puerto Aventuras Mexico about 5 years ago. For those that do not know Puerto Aventuras Is about 15 Minutes from Playa del Carmen and 40 minutes the other direction to Tulum. We sold our businesses, cars, houses, everything and left with 12 suitcases and three dogs!! We absolutely love it here! We opened our real estate company, Brooke Kinder Realty after three years of selling for a different brokerage. We just wanted to get a feel for the land and see what all was different from American real estate. Everythings is going really well and we'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a new, more relaxing lifestyle. Anyways, just wanted to drop in and introduce myself and wish everyone a prosperous 2024!

Welcome to all new and current posters! As we have many posters to the Mexico forum, I thought it would be great to find out a little more about every one. Please introduce yourselves so we get to know each other.

Cheers,
Will

Using the Forum

The Expat Forum - Mexico is the place for people to share information and experiences about life as a foreigner in Mexico. We’re all here to share opinions and the community will enjoy hearing your thoughts.

Our hip includes a wide mixture of people. Some post frequently and at length on every topic. Some come with a question and only want an answer. Don’t be disheartened, though, if you start a thread and find it met with deafening silence – it happens sometimes to all of us. It’s nothing personal, maybe no one else knows much about it.

Sometimes, new revive long-dormant threads. Don’t be put off because the last post was 3 years ago. That only means the rest of us ran out of things to say – your new contribution can often start discussion off again. However, before answering or commenting on any questions on a long dead thread, that the question may no longer be relevant and the person who posed the question may be long gone.

Inevitably in a community like this, we’ve all grown to know one another very well, and indeed many of us have made good friends and even started relationships through the site. As someone new you may feel awkward about ing in a discussion where people who clearly know one another are throwing comments back and forth or sharing in-jokes you don't get – it can easily feel like you’re interrupting. Please be assured you are not and we'd love new people to in these chats.

Do take a look at the recent existing threads carefully before starting a new thread.

Debate

The Expat Forum is a friendly site where people come to discuss topics. Frequently an interesting discussion involves disagreement and often people have quite firm and ionate beliefs. That’s very welcome! Discussions where everyone agrees with one another are actually quite dull.

However, we ask that all posters argue in constructive, measured and respectful . Discussion must always be focused on the issues, not the person. If you disagree with someone then engage with their ideas rather than any opinions you may have formed of them as an individual or assumptions you have made about them. If you disagree with a member's views about immigration that’s fine. If you speculate about their personal hygiene or presumed intelligence, it’s not okay.

Ultimately the s are here to ensure a pleasant board and to regulate discussion. If you have a problem with someone’s posting then please don’t take a broadside on the board but one of us. The s for Mexico are Tundragreen and Isla Verde. You can report a post by clicking on the red and white triangle and exclamation mark at the top of every post, by sending a Personal Message to one of the s, or by clicking on the button at the top and bottom of every page. In addition, if a decides that something is inappropriate, their judgement must be respected by all parties concerned.

Off topic discussions

Frequently. discussion will stray from the topic mentioned in the title of the thread. This is a normal occurrence in any face-to-face discussion and it frequently happens here. If the discussion goes too far afield, someone will usually suggest getting back to the topic. In addition, a will occasionally split the off-topic comments into a separate thread. But wandering discussions are a part of normal human intercourse and are given pretty wide latitude here. It makes the conversations more interesting or more frustrating depending on one's point of view.

In addition to all things Mexican, we also have La Chatarrería, an area where other topics can be discussed.

Finally, I hope you enjoy the Expat Forum as much as all the regulars here. We think it’s a very special place and we’re pleased you’ve chosen to us.

Hello Everyone,
Good morning.
I am new to this forum, just ed. I am in my 50's and my wife is in her late 40's. We have 2 small kids. We live in Atlanta and have been visiting Mexico since 2015. We have been to Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Cabo, Tulum, Cozumel and Playa de Carmen.
I have always wanted to move to Mexico after I retire. My wife is not convinced.
I have read about Merida and Ajijic as great places to live. Just trying to get different points of view from everyone on here that currently live in Mexico, on their daily life and experiences and most importantly, how costly is it on a monthly basis for a family of 4.
Thank you and look forward to getting to know everyone on this Forum.
Stay Blessed.
Derek

Hi Everyone,

We are Australians and my wife and I have been expatriated in quite a few countries in the past so we've been in and out of Expatforum lots over the years and have come to rely on it as a great initial source of ex officio information. It looks like we'll be moving to Mexico in the coming months and mostly we are researched, prepared and excited about getting there. We will eventually have all the right visa and other istration in place to work and the only remaining question at the moment is how to best transfer MXN Pesos to Aust dollars (AUD) in our Australian Bank but I'm sure we'll work it out.

Saludo!

New to this forum. Expat Canadian who has now been living in Mazatlan for the past 30 years. After 15 years in a high stress real estate job in Ontario Canada, I was offered a part time job in the vacation industry, while on a vacation in Mazatlan. Never looked back. Relaxed lifestyle, better weather, and quality of life at a greatly reduced cost; although that is changing more recently.
I was looking for somewhere to relay an issue that has come up that I encountered recently, that others may wish to be aware of… 20 years ago I deposited some money into a private Mexican pension ( company was called Profuturo), and subsequently kind of forgot about it over the years. This past year, while looking through files for something else, I stumbled across the Protofuro folder. Took it to Protofuro to find out its status, and was amazed to find out it had about 1/4 of a million pesos in it! Profuturo advised me to go to Mexican Social Security to go through the procedure and paperwork to extract this pension money. I started that process in June 2024; a bit exhaustive and a bit costly to satisfy all the requirements. Finally, around July 30th, I submitted everything to Social Security, who informed me the paperwork was fine, but that the Mexican Federal Government had drained the completely during the recent federal election. I am not alone. Apparently, this happened to thousands, if not more pensioners over 65, who had not accessed their pension s. We are talking millions of dollars here on a national level, and have all basically been told “ it’s the government, there is nothing we can do” I have lodged a formal complaint with the Canadian Consul here in Mazatlan, who was helpful through connections to get me hooked up with a lawyer who used to work pensions in Social Security. So far, it is all new, completely confusing with the new government coming in, and a positive outcome looks pretty bleak. I am amazed this has not yet developed into a huge National scandal, as it is grand theft on a massive scale. Just a caution for expats thinking of depositing pension money into any Mexican pension plan; based on my experience- don’t.

Good day everyone! I'm new to this forum and I was interested in learning what it's like retiring in Mexico. I'm originally from the Dallas-Fort Worth area but now living in Southern Mississippi. I'm retired Air Force and Federal civil service plus my SS. I'm married to a Filipina and we have given thought about living in the Philippines. Too many inconveniences and snail service on everything. I tried living in the Philippines in 2002 but could only tolerate 8 months. Unreal on how things are done. What are some of the pros and cons of living in Mexico? First of all, I don't speak Spanish and that could be a big issue. Is a 3500-4000 dollar budget realistic? Thanks for all replys!

Hi folks,

Moving temporarily (perhaps more permanently in the future) to Mexico (Near PV) in the months and looking for places to get info. Always appreciate any/everyone who takes the time to respond. I'm a tech geek, motorcyclist, dad, and husband, and I was born in the early 70s. We're moving from the San Francisco Bay Area to see if we might think we'd retire there.

Hi everyone. I lived in Jerez Mexico for about 4 years when I was taking a break from reality. Now that I am actually retired I'm thinking of going back to Mexico for a dew years, if I can find a cheap place near a beach. I only have Canadian pension, so appreciate any suggestions about destinations where it's warm and my Can$ will stretch out.

Hello, I'm Jeramy(38). I currently live in Idaho with my wife, son and daughter. Not side of the kids will be ing us or not at this time. My wife(41) is in the process of getting her dual citizenship by way of her father being a citizen. We are in the midst of planning our move to the Guadalajara area. We are planning on living there permanently... most likely. Purchasing a home and starting a business. I've done a lot of home renovation but I'm looking at starting a small mechanic shop, if possible. Using my mechanic background and tools, with her management, we hope to be at least somewhat successful. My wife has her father and extended family in the Guadalajara area as well.

I'll have to look through all the threads to find useful tips about moving there. I would be excited to meet anyone when i get down there.

Hello, my name is Teal. I live in Houston, TX and considering moving to San Miguel de Allende for retirement and maybe volunteering. In my earlier years I traveled all over Mexico and went to San Miguel about 30 years ago. I have ruled out just about every place in USA and now considering MX. I have some questions but maybe I’ll start a new thread.
