Hello team,
I am reaching out to the ExpatForum masses to see if anyone has managed to find what I've as yet been unable to track down -- a bank that will allow t s where one of the holders lives in the US and the other in Taiwan. I have previously used PayPal and Wise for transferring money to my girlfriend (she's the one in Taiwan), though am looking for something more than just a transfer service but rather something where we can maintain a t balance easily accessible to both of us in our respective countries of residence.
My girlfriend has noted that the Taiwanese banking system is extremely insular and closed off, as it's never been an international financial center nor has ambitions to be. Also, despite being able to minimize fees via one-off transfers through PayPal or Wise, she has still been forced to pay extra fees by her bank in Taiwan when attempting to move funds into her there. Perhaps this is indeed the norm, and there's no way of getting around it? Also does not appear, at least on initial poking around, that it would be possible for me to be added to her Taiwanese bank as an additional holder, as I do not reside there nor have any sort of residency permit/credentials.
I have explored options from HSBC and Citibank, that do appear to offer international t s -- however, those seem geared towards people in a far higher demographic than myself, with balance minimums of $100K to avoid monthly fees. Going back to the closed-ness of the Taiwanese banking system, she has even pointed out that although she has both one HSBC in Taiwan as well as another in Hong Kong, they are considered completely separate entities and she can't even easily transfer funds between them without incurring additional fees.
Perhaps I have been spoiled with the privileges afforded me in the US, whereby it's fairly easy to avoid monthly maintenance fees and other banking fees by having a solid balance (that's not in the six-figure range). But is it really not possible to have a t where one holder is in the US and the other in Taiwan? I can't imagine we are the only bi-continental couple in the world.
Thanks very much in advance for any experiences you're able to share, or suggestions to along.
Cheers,
Erik
