The resident visa process is definitely point based. There is a slim chance to qualify while you are offshore and without a job offer.

 

Have you looked at the New Zealand Immigration website? It lays things out pretty well. You can also estimate how many points you have to see if it is worth trying to try for immigration. There are also links to the short and long term skills lists that are needed in the country and if you have those skills your likelihood of having enough points and getting and Invitation to Apply will be better.
