I'm reaching out for some guidance as I navigate a significant decision in my academic and professional journey. I recently completed my bachelor's degree in GIS in U.S. and am now considering pursuing a master's in Computer Science in the U.S. As an international student on an F-1 visa, gaining practical work experience during my studies is a top priority for me.
Here's where I'm torn:
- Option 1: Attend a university that offers a co-op program. This would allow me to integrate work placements into my curriculum, providing hands-on experience in my field. I've learned that participating in a co-op can be facilitated through Curricular Practical Training (T), which permits off-campus employment when it's an integral part of the curriculum.
- Option 2: Enroll in a higher-ranked university that doesn't have a formal co-op program but offers strong career center . While these institutions may not guarantee internships, they provide resources like resume workshops, interview preparation, and job search assistance.
For those who have faced a similar dilemma or have experience in this area:
- How did you approach this decision?
- What factors did you consider most critical?
- How did your choice impact your career prospects post-graduation?
